The discovery of coal beneath the fields of East Durham during the 19th century, transformed the tiny hamlet of Morton into the thriving township of Murton. By 1856 Murton was almost unrecognisable with new houses for miners and three pubs. One of which was The Knaresborough, situated on Williams Road. Today the pub is now in residential use.
