In 1978 Scotland qualified for the world cup in Argentina and so the terms "Tartan Army" are Scotland fans and "Ally" was the team manager - Ally MacLeod. The term "Ally's Tartan Army" comes from the novelty record released Andy Cameron, a Scottish comedian, to mark the occasion.
