Under new management since 2015 the Salmon Inn is situated in the middle of Belford, Northumberland. It used to be an old coaching inn on the main route between London and Edinburgh.

In 1963 Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton had both founded key parts of their relationship at the The Salmon while filming Becket. A year later they would marry. The Salmon was the first open pub they would pass on their way back to Cornhill, and according to the papers of the time, in “the company of the legendary Peter O’Toole they would arrive in two chauffeur driven cars” and call in for a few early evening drinks.

The landlords at the time, were more than happy to see them and provided the stars with a measure of privacy in the pub’s snug, and in return Elizabeth signed a Vaux beer mat “To Hilda Best Wishes” on July 23, 1963.
